John White married Catherine Wherry in 1851 on the border between South Australia and Victoria. Little was known of his background until DNA identified James White and Alice Hearn from Chinnor, Oxfordshire and Pyrton, Oxfordshire to probably be his parents. John grew up in Remenham before most likely moving to London to become a butcher, with his aunt’s husband.
