Foreword
Robert (Bob) James Linford in Canberra first commenced research for the “Linford” family tree in the 1970’s. Robert is a descendant of Samuel Linford born 1849 and his wife Martha Tucker. Bob Linford researched “The Linford’s in England” we have found no need to alter this in any way. Heather MacQueen joined Bob with his bequest for information in the early 1980’s. Heather (Linford) MacQueen is a descendant of George Linford born 1867 and his wife Emma Camm. And what excitement when Bob and his wife Pat Linford came from Canberra to Victoria, in the 1980’s to visit Heather MacQueen at Stanhope, and they met in person for the first time. Tragically Heather MacQueen passed away in 1993 and the book was closed for a time.
In about 1996 interest was again revived and the following record is the result. Sadly Bob has been unable to continue to help us in the last few years, but we have continued on. Our ultimate aim has been to finish Bob’s “Baby”. Although every effort has been taken to ensure that this family history is correct, there is every possibility that there will be errors or comments made, that will not be agreed with, by some members of the family. To avoid any unnecessary embarrassment to some family members, some information has been suppressed.
All births before 1920 were taken from the microfiche. Certificates were sought for a number of births, deaths, and marriages. The Public Records office was used for some information with regards to inquests and The Closer Settlement information. Deaths and marriages were also searched as far as possible on the microfiche to be sure of the information. Various newspapers were also searched and relevant information used. Some Electoral Rolls were studied to verify where Linford family members were living at a given time. Some Hospital records and The Victorian Railways records were investigated. War records were checked as far as possible to verify the information we have provided.
Many a Cemetery was walked to find headstones, and Cemetery records checked to verify information. The bulk of our more recent information has come from family members. We hope that everyone enjoys reading this “Linford” family tree and we apologize if we have made any error that will cause any person distress. This has not been intended.
We have not been able to use all the photos that we have been supplied with. It was just not possible to include a photo of every family member. We have chosen what we believe is a good selection of photos for each branch of the family. Some are only photo – copies. Their quality is not as good, but we have included them anyway. We have chosen to do this, as we wanted to include as much as possible on all our family members, and in some cases original photos were just not available.
